Online therapy in Australia: How to get started?

Let's walk you through the simple steps of how to get started with online therapy

Online therapy in Australia: How to get started?

1/ Start with a mental health check-in

Online mental health assessment DASS21

Our mental health check-in uses the DASS-21 assessment which is a set of three self-report scales designed to measure the emotional states of depression, anxiety and stress.

This mental health self-assessment is a quick, free and confidential check-in that provides you a better understanding of your mental wellbeing.

You can use the results of this test to tailor your psychologist search and increase your chances of getting a better match.

2/ Get matched with an online therapist

Online therapy starts with finding the right psychologist for your needs and schedule.

We recommend using our matching tool as it's the simplest way to find a therapist. However, if you want to be more specific in your search, you could also browse our online psychologist's profiles and use our filters to refine your search.

Once you've picked your psychologist, you can browse their availability and book your online therapy session.

3/ Upload your Medicare documents (when eligible)

Medicare journey for your psychology sessions

To be eligible for Medicare rebates, you must possess a valid Medicare card and obtain a referral letter as well as a Mental Health Plan from your General Practitioner prior to your session.

To claim your sessions, you must upload your Medicare documents to your account via the Medicare tab of your dashboard before your session occurs.

Once your session is completed, you can submit your claim to Medicare.

4/ Join your online therapy session

4/ Join your online therapy session

My Mirror has made using online therapy as easy as possible. To start your session, simply log into your My Mirror account from your phone, tablet or laptop. We recommend using a laptop, as it's a more comfortable option for your therapy sessions.

There are options to turn the video camera off so that you can turn the session into an audio call if you choose to. You are also able to send messages to your psychologist during the call using the chat function.

You remain in control of how you want your therapy sessions to be conducted and when you want to schedule them.

Is online therapy is right for me?

There’s no universal fit in therapy. If face-to-face sessions don’t feel right for you, then that’s ok. Therapy looks different for everyone, and the reasons you may choose online therapy can be far-reaching.

Online therapy is secure and convenient, with no waiting lists and Medicare rebates process for you. Whether you're living in a remote community, cannot travel to your psychologists' office, or simply want a therapy solution that works around your schedule, online therapy could be a great option for you.

Is online therapy effective?

Studies show that online therapy is just as effective as face-to-face therapy, helping hundreds of thousands of Australians access professional therapy services from their own home.

No two people are identical, and that’s why therapy should be personalised and adaptive. Online therapy allows you to do just this – personalised therapy sessions using evidence-based techniques.

What does the research say about online therapy?

Is online therapy safe & secure?

Confidential and discrete sessions are a vital part of therapy. All My Mirror psychologists are fully qualified and registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (or AHPRA for short). This means they are both ethically and legally bound to keep their sessions confidential, and gives clients peace of mind to talk openly.

All our online therapy sessions are end-to-end encrypted, so only you and your psychologist have access to the call. No third parties, including My Mirror itself, can access data from the call.

Online therapy works best when our clients know they’re in a safe space. That’s why we take our privacy and security policies seriously, creating the best possible environment for you and your online therapy sessions.

How do I know I’ve found the right psychologist?

You’ll know you’ve found a good psychologist match when you’re able to speak freely and open up in your therapy sessions. They should make you feel heard, have experience working in your area of concern, and most importantly help you to see improvements as your sessions progress over time.

What clients say about My Mirror

So grateful

I am so grateful for my psychologist from My Mirror, and having my psychologist available via telehealth has been so much more beneficial for my mental health. Being able to be seen, heard and listened to rather than waiting so long on a waitlist has been a godsend.

Fantastic experience

Having been initially sceptical, my overall experience with My Mirror has been fantastic. My Mirror matched and connected me with a psychologist who simply “got” me from the very beginning. I cannot recommend this service enough.

Big tick

I'm one of those people who doesn't enjoy going out of my home or talking to a doctor, let alone a psychologist. Without My Mirror and the services they provide I would most likely neglect seeking help, so it's a big tick from me for these guys.

What we need

One of the best online platforms I have ever used. The simplicity of the bulk billing system, rebates and the selection of well educated clinical psychologists is what we need. Couldn't of found a better website. 🙌
